SKB 2 v 2 Shamrock Rovers
It was a tale of two halves at Ellenfield park on Saturday morning with the visitors breaking up play in the first half and SKB struggling to make some nice passing football count in the final third of the pitch. The first half finished with the away team two goals up but the SKB boys came out galvanised in the second half following a chat with Dave and Craig and began to boss the game in midfield. An upright shaving free kick began the promise of a revival closely followed by an excellently worked goal taken well by Tony McGlynn whose strong run and determination in the 6 yard box was rewarded with an excellent finish. The second goal came when Danny Quinn went on a run from defence and threaded a lovely ball through to Shane Carter who neatly turned and placed it in the bottom corner. With five minutes to go the boys now had the belief that they could win this game and peppered the rovers goal with shots which perhaps would have gone in on another day. The return match away at Tallaght stadium should be interesting.
St Francis 0 – SKB 3
It was a slightly depleted side that travelled to Baldonnel on Saturday with several SKB players out injured or sick. The game was played on the St Francis main pitch in glorious sunshine and it got off to a great start for SKB, with the in form Carl Keely bagging the first in the top left hand corner following a throw in from Tony McGlynn. The away side were on top for the majority of the first half but any sporadic chances that St Francis had were excellently dealt with by Shane Carter deputising for our regular keeper Eric Cumberton (get well soon Eric). The second half saw a rattled St Francis side unable to deal with the persistent pressure from SKB and some dubious refereeing was the only deterrent to an even bigger margin, with at least one penalty claim denied, not to mention several missed hand balls. The second goal came from a well floated corner by Danny Burnell who found the head of James Swan for his second goal in as many games. James went on to win a free kick, taken by Danny Burnell who found the net to make it 3. The boys dedicated the win to their team mate Stephen McKnight who bravely travelled to the match to cheer the lads on despite having a suspected broken ankle – hopefully he will be ok when he revisits the hospital during the week.
