Our Under 12 Premier team retained the clubs possession of the SFAI Norton Cup this morning with a resounding 3-1 victory over St Josephs Boys in the splendid surroundings of Wayside Celtics Jackson Park in Kiltiernan.
They got off to the worst possible start falling a goal behind as early as the third minute, this setback resulted in them taking longer than usual to get any momentum into their game but towards the middle of the first half they began to exert pressure on Joeys and were rewarded when Philly Ward outpaced his marker to get on to the end a fine ball by Josh Clifford to round the keeper and slot in from a tightening angle. Just before the interval an injury to Josh Clifford looked like it would neccessitate his withdrawl but he battled on gamely although his commanding influnce was somewhat diminished from then on.
They began the second half in a much more determined fashion than they did the first making much more use of Shane Elworthy down the right hand side. their constant pressure paid off and again it was Philly Ward who supplied the finish this time with a high looping shot which dipped under the bar 12 minutes into the half. Shortly afterwards a James Dunne header struck the crossbar with the Joes keeper saving Richie Purdys goalbound rebound.
A double injury blow in the space of 5 minutes at this point of the game saw Josh Clifford finally succumb to his earlier injury to be replaced by II Premier player Robbie McCourt in the middle of the park and soon after James Dunne moved back to defence to replace the injured Alan McQuillan allowing Richie Purdy to move inside with Donal Timoney coming on on the left flank. Timoney was a constant threat from the time of his introduction and the third goal came following a brilliant run down the left by him and a pass inside to Richie Purdy who in turn played in Sean Goulding to round the keeper and slot into an empty net to seal a thouroughly deserved and long awaited Cup win for this team.
Team; Evan Gaffney, Sean Stowe (Andrew Gorman), Evan Osam, Alan McQuillan (Donal Timoney), Kevin McGrane, Josh Clifford(Robbie McCourt), James Dunne, Philip Ward (Tunde Shidabee), Sean Goulding (Daniel Mandriou), Richie Purdy, Shane Elworthy, Thomas Tiernan.
Our 13 Premier made it a weekend to remember for the club by adding the DDSL Premier League to last weeks DDSL Liam Brady Cup when they clinched the title with a 3-0 away victory over Ballyoulster United.
