Our Brenfer 13 Premier moved into the 3rd round of the Kirby Cup winning 5-0 against Maynooth Town and our 11.4 team beat Leicester Celtic to qualify for the 3rd round of the DDSL Kavanagh Cup.

There were good wins also for our 13 & 15 Major sides against Phoenix F C and Cambridge Boys.

The Schoolboys season recommenced yesterday with only 3 games down for decision none of which produced an SKB win. Our 17 Premier drew 1-1 at home to St Patricks Athletic and also at Ward Cross a 1-1 draw was the outcome in the top of the table Brenfer under 13 Premier League tie between Tony Gleeson’s team and Ashbourne United. On this occasion the Under 13′s and 14′s hosted two top rated opponents in Cherry Orchard and Templeogue United respectively in games that would have done justice to the finals of both competitions and as was the case last week with Home Farm’s Under 12′s it was harsh to see two more quality teams going out of National Cups at such an early stage due to the unnecessary redrafting of the qualifying rules by the SFAI governing body.

In the Under 13 Troy Cup game Cherry Orchard dominated much of the game and having gone a goal ahead two minutes into the second it was difficult to see how the home side could get back into it but with eight minutes to go Evan Pierce headed home a cross from Ryan Graydon following a well worked corner kick to bring the sides into extra time. In the extra time it was the home team who dominated and Ryan Graydon tapped home a left wing cross in the first period and then Evan Pierce got his second – a lovely finish with his left foot to close out the result – a result few could have envisaged ten minutes into the second half.

The two top teams in the Under 14 age group met in the Goodson Cup and games between SKB and Templeogue are always very close affairs and this was no exception. Jamie Gray scored first to put the hosts ahead but when goalkeeper Luca Gratzer mis-judged a cross the forward following up tapped in an equaliser, it allowed Templeogue to gain a foothold in the game. Soon after a penalty awarded to the home side seemed to indicate that things were going their way but Nathan Noone – Garland placed his kick too close to the keeper who saved and also done well to save the follow-up strike from the same player. Michael O’Connor restored the home lead – striking home following a fine ball from Robbie McCourt. Still Templeogue came back again with ten minutes to go – following a corner kick awarded to SKB they broke straight downfield to score to bring the game to extra-time. Twenty minutes extra time failed to settle it – but penalties did – Templeogue taking the honours 4-3.

Also our Brenfer 13 Premier team qualified for the open draw of the SFAI Troy Cup with a hard fought win away at Laytown United and our 11A Sunday side joined the 11A Saturday in the next round of the DDSL Condren Cup with a 4-1 home win over Ballyoulster United.

The AUL Premier A beat Brendanville/Oxmantown 3-0 in the Leinster Junior Cup.

UNDER 8A NEED A GOALKEEPER

the challenge that lay ahead at Wicklow Golf Club. There was a calmness on the bus with the main topic
of conversation being the absence of two of the pre tournament favourites ; Peadar Dunne who was on
warm weather training in Australia and Dermot Wilkins who now only plays in the Majors.

The gaffer aka Brendan Bermingham seemed relaxed as the bus pulled away from the Comet (no
harm in mentioning one of our sponsors), brother Donie seemed a little nervous as he was defending
champion and jacket holder. Others noticeably itchy were Decie O’Hara, worried no doubt as to what
price to pitch the Christmas Santas at, Pat Mc Kane crestfallen as a result of the withdrawal of his over
35’s team was being consoled by one of his protégées Paul Usher and Willie Fitzpatrick was delighted
the audition for the Pancho Gonzales Christmas Panto had gone well and would need to keep the
moustache for another month. (Movember how are u). The Hollywood Lakes mafia of Tony and Mick
Dunne along with Damien O’ Rourke were scheming, Tony trying to wangle a €5 out of everybody.

A short distance down the motorway and it started to rain. Still we were all reassured when our on
board meteorologist Eamonn Hanlon informed us that it would pass. (In reality have you ever seen
a postman out in the rain?) As we passed Bray it was lashing, still the reassurance it would pass!!! In
fairness to the bus driver he managed just about to see Wicklow Golf Clubhouse and deposit us. We
were greeted by 2 of our stalwarts Jack Bracken and Mick Lally who felt we were mad.

A hearty breakfast was wolfed down as the rain lashed on the clubhouse window. Nobody seemed
too perturbed but when a lifeboat sailed by the window, eyebrows were raised. Moment of truth,
the gaffer in discussion with a member of Wicklow G.C. and the discussion seemed animated (older
members would remember that the gaffer had previously sent SKB golfers out in the snow at Mount
Juliet and we were all naturally nervous). Would you believe it! There was a break in the weather and off
we went. There are days when you wake up and feel it going to be one of those great days and others
when you should have stayed in bed. This was one of the latter. The mother and father of weather was
thrown at us, hail, rain, gale force winds and sea spray. (Should have mentioned that Wicklow G.C. is
atop of a cliff and skirts the Irish Sea.) Balls flew into the Irish Sea like confetti at a wedding, the going
was sheer lunacy. First to crack was young Charlie Hyland. It was initially feared that Charlie at 2ft 6in
had been washed out to sea but thankfully these rumours were dispelled when it was reported that
Charlie, having packed it in at the 5,th was in fact at the bar organising the seating arrangements . On
we went, people were hallucinating…….some swore they saw Noah’s Ark, others got frost bite, others
thought they were golfers! Others used their ingenuity to pass the time with Tony Gleeson and Keith
McConnell devising a new game….. throw the club as far as you can. Keith won by virtue of the fact he
found his club in the gorse, Tony sadly was unable to locate his, his forensic skills letting him down on
this occasion. Then would you believe it after 3 and a half hrs of utter mayhem the sun came out and we
all arrived back at the clubhouse safe, sound and a little wet. A little wet…. Christ even the ducks stayed
indoors. Questions regarding rain gear and better club waterproofs were deftly dealt with in a calmness
that was a hallmark of his football career by Pat Daly……..wise up and leave me alone he informed all

and sundry……………and that was that.

The prize giving took place in the golf clubhouse and pride of place went to Alan Cornwall who had a
remarkable score in the conditions and was a worthy overall winner. He donned the jacket with pride
and in his acceptance speech put a lot of his success down to off loading Charlie early in his round.
Other notable winners were class 1 Eamonn Hanlon and class 2 winner Pat Daly. The Decie O’Hara prize
(a 2002 boot bag) for endeavour was again eagerly contested. The smart money was on either Damien
O’Hara or Joe Quinn. Joe won it by a whisker and in a very moving acceptance speech hoped that his
loving wife Jan would appreciate the prize at Xmas. The fact that she had got the same present for the
last couple of years might be an issue. The gaffer informed us that the next outing would be to Knights
brook in Dec for the turkey shoot. And then it was time to depart at 5.45pm, …at 6pm,… at 6.15pm,…
at 6.30pm and finally we left at 6.40pm, this time wet on the inside. The return journey flew with the
infamous SKB banter and humour to the fore. The only sad note was that Dougie Fitzpatrick never did
find his tracker bond.

Best wishes

Golfspy

FUNDRAISER FOR ADVIC RAISES €3,700 – THANKS TO ALL
<link
